We are proud to announce that Mark Ruffle has won the prestigious English National Ballet 'My First Ballet' poster competition. His artwork for Sleeping Beauty wowed the panel of expert judges, and as a result his poster will be used to advertise the ballet and forthcoming events nationwide. What is more, another of our talented artists, Javier Joaquin was awarded runner up for his take on the brief. All in all a huge success for our guys!

Carol Liddiment wins another award!!

Fantastic news for children's illustrator Carol Liddiment whose wonderful art for the book 'How Many Donkeys? An Arabic Counting Tale' has won the 2010 Middle East Book Award for best picture book! Congratulations to her and the authors Margaret Read McDonald and Nadia Jameel Taibah.

Here's a little more info of the award:
Established in 1999, the Middle East Book Award recognizes quality books for children and young adults that contribute meaningfully to an understanding of the Middle East and its component societies and cultures. Books are judged on the authenticity of their portrayal of a Middle Eastern subject, as well as on their characterization, plot, and appeal for the intended audience.

Richard Merritt goes black and white for Reader's Digest

Richard has recently completed a set of 6 book covers for Reader's Digest for their World's Best Reads series. These included Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights and Sherlock Holmes. A bit of a departure from his normal work, these are all rendered as silhouettes with the addition of a coloured foil. They have been so well received that another 6 books are due to be given the Richard Merritt treatment so stay tuned!

Insight into Laure Fournier's work

We often get asked how our wonderful illustrators go about creating their stunning artworks so we've been getting some of them to explain their processes, and today, let's look at the work of Laure Fournier. When you first look at her beautiful imagery you'd be forgiven for thinking they are traditional hand painted illustrations. However with the wonder of technology Laure uses an incredible tablet (a Wacom Cintiq) that acts as a screen so she can draw directly onto it creating instant digital sketches, as seen in image one below. Then she continues to layer colour and detailing on the sketch, much in the same way as a painter would, but in Photoshop instead. The results speak for themselves and she maintains a nice balance of producing imagery digitally but still with the hand painted look.

Our artist David Whittle has recently jetted off to Egypt to take part as a lead illustrator on an exciting advertising project for Revo energy drink. In collaboration with a film studio in Bristol, David worked with a talented bunch of folk for a week to create a stunning motion capture animation on a grand scale by literally painting walls and pavements or Cairo! Congratulations go out to our exceptional illustrator Alison Jay this month, as her gorgeous children's book, 'Welcome to the Zoo' had been bought by Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Sponsored by the Dollywood foundation the library offers up free books to go out to children under five right across the USA, Canada and now parts of the UK to encourage them to get into read. A huge 148,000 copies will be snapped up by the library and will be winging their way to thousands of lucky children on both sides of the Atlantic! Well done Alison!

With the dawn of Oyster card travel on London's over ground network, illustrator David Whittle has been busy working on a big advertising campaign for South Eastern trains. His wonderful artwork will grace key poster sites at railway stations across the network. The artwork is also used in direct mail, press, on buses, underground sites, and online, with his quirky characters being used for an animation on the South Eastern Railway home page. One of our talented artists, Laure Fournier, has recently returned from a trip to Canada, where she took part in the mammoth task of painting this incredible fresco, with the society, Murale Création, who are based in Quebec. It tells the story of the city of Trois-Rivières and took countless man hours to finish. It now provides a wonderful lasting legacy for the city and a great achievement for our own little Michelangelo! Well done Laure!
